American Home Shield vs. Choice Home Warranty 2026 — Side-by-Side Comparison

American Home Shield vs. Choice Home Warranty: HVAC caps, pricing, coverage, service fees, and which company is the better choice in 2026. Real comparison with no fluff.

These are two of the most purchased — and most complained about — home warranty companies in the country. Both are large, heavily marketed, and have significant BBB complaint histories. The question isn't whether they're perfect; it's which one is less bad for your situation.

Short answer: AHS is better for HVAC coverage. Choice is marginally cheaper. Neither is our top recommendation for most homeowners.

HVAC Coverage: AHS Wins

The cap difference is significant:

American Home Shield
  • ShieldPlatinum: $5,000 HVAC cap
  • ShieldGold: $5,000 HVAC cap
  • ShieldSilver: HVAC covered, lower caps
Choice Home Warranty
  • Total Plan: $3,000 cap
  • Basic Plan: $3,000 cap (same)

In markets where HVAC replacement runs $7,000–$15,000, the $2,000 gap between a $5,000 cap and a $3,000 cap is meaningful. Neither company fully covers high-end HVAC replacement, but AHS leaves you less exposed.

The rust and corrosion difference is real. AHS covers rust and corrosion damage — a meaningful differentiator for humid states (Florida, Gulf Coast, Southeast) and coastal areas. Choice excludes rust and corrosion damage. If you're in a humid or coastal market, AHS's coverage is substantively broader.

Pricing: Choice is Slightly Cheaper

Choice's Total Plan at $46–$55/month is straightforwardly cheaper than AHS's mid-tier plans. But the comparison needs context:

  • AHS's $30/month ShieldSilver entry price is lower than Choice's $46/month entry
  • AHS's higher-tier Platinum plan can run $80–$110/month
  • Choice's $85 service fee vs. AHS's selectable $75/$100/$125 service fee

If you choose AHS's $75 service fee option, AHS prices are higher. If you choose the $125 service fee (lower monthly premium), AHS can compete on monthly cost.

Bottom line on price: Choice is marginally cheaper at comparable coverage tiers. The savings are $5–$15/month over a plan that has a $2,000 lower HVAC cap. That's a bad trade.

Coverage Differences

AHS covers more:

  • Rust and corrosion damage (Choice excludes)
  • Undetectable pre-existing conditions (with limitations)
  • More liberal coverage on refrigerant/Freon in higher-tier plans

Choice covers roughly the same standard items at a lower price with lower caps.

Both companies have extensive exclusion lists. Neither is a "cover everything" provider. Read the full contract before purchasing either.

Complaint History: Both Have Problems

Choice Home Warranty has accumulated 10,000+ BBB complaints and was the subject of an Arizona AG enforcement action for systematic HVAC claim denial and deceptive marketing. That enforcement history is a material fact in evaluating the company.

AHS has a significant complaint volume too — it's the largest home warranty company by market share, so raw complaint numbers are partly size-driven. AHS's BBB rating is B, same as Choice.

Neither company has a clean regulatory record. The Choice AG action distinguishes them, though.

Who Each Is Best For

Choose AHS if:

  • You're in a humid or coastal market (rust/corrosion coverage matters)
  • You want a higher HVAC cap ($5,000 vs. $3,000)
  • You have an older HVAC system and want more liberal coverage terms
  • You're willing to pay more for broader coverage

Choose Choice if:

  • Price is the primary driver and you accept the coverage tradeoffs
  • Your market has lower HVAC replacement costs (rural Southeast, Midwest)
  • Your HVAC is newer and less likely to need full replacement during the policy term
  • You've compared the specific contract terms and Choice's exclusions don't affect your situation

Don't choose either if:

  • You're in a Western state — Old Republic and Landmark offer better coverage there
  • AFC Home Club is available and no-cap HVAC coverage is important to you
  • You want a company with minimal regulatory complaint history (2-10 HBW or Old Republic are cleaner)

The Verdict

AHS is the better choice between the two — higher HVAC cap, rust/corrosion coverage, and a somewhat cleaner enforcement record than Choice's Arizona AG settlement. The price premium over Choice is modest and worth it for the coverage improvement.

That said, both companies lag behind our top recommendations. If Old Republic or AFC Home Club are available in your state, compare those first.
