Climate and Coverage Context
Ohio's climate puts both heating and cooling under strain, in our reading
Ohio has warmed by more than 1.5 degrees F since the start of the 20th century, with the warming concentrated in winter and spring and little change in summer. Annual, winter and summer precipitation have all been above the long-term average since 1990; the long-term averages are 38.9 inches a year, 8.0 inches in winter and 11.6 inches in summer. Very hot days have been below the long-term average since the mid-1950s, and cold nights have been near or below average since 1990.
Both systems get real use here, so look for a plan that covers heating and cooling and compare its cap with your own replacement quote.

How Ohio Regulates Home Warranties
Regulator
Ohio Attorney General (Consumer Protection); Ohio Department of Insurance has no home warranty program we could confirm
Legal framework
Home service contracts are not insurance (R.C. 3905.422) and fall under the Consumer Sales Practices Act
Ohio Revised Code 3905.422 says a home service contract is not insurance and its sale is not governed by Ohio's insurance laws, unless a licensed property and casualty insurer issues it as a policy. The same section makes the sale a consumer transaction under Chapter 1345, the Consumer Sales Practices Act. The Ohio Attorney General has used that law against home warranty sellers: the office sued Amazon Home Warranty and Amazon Warranty Administrators over alleged failures to honor contracts, and its newsletter said one company was not registered with the Secretary of State as state law requires. A 2011 code version lists the former home warranty company chapter (3957) as repealed.
Type of rules: Not insurance, no registration program found. Home service contracts are outside the insurance code and we found no registration program, so consumer protection law is the main recourse.
Checked against the official sources listed below. Researched October 2026; laws and agency pages change, so confirm with the regulator before you rely on a detail.

Consumer Tips for Ohio Homeowners
Expect consumer protection law to be your main protection
We found no registration program in Ohio, so read the contract closely, keep every claim communication in writing and know that complaints may go to the Attorney General's consumer protection office.
Do the cap math for your own system
Get a replacement quote from a local HVAC contractor, then enter it in the calculator above. Our top-ranked option here, AFC Home Club, has an HVAC cap of No cap; the difference between your quote and each company's cap is your out-of-pocket cost if the system fails completely. Details
Know the enforcement record
The Ohio Attorney General sued Amazon Home Warranty and Amazon Warranty Administrators over alleged failures to honor contracts, and its newsletter said one company was not registered with the Secretary of State as state law requires. Ohio treats the sale of a home service contract as a consumer transaction under the Consumer Sales Practices Act. Details
Confirm coverage for your address
4 companies in our data serve only some states and are marked "check availability" for Ohio. Confirm with the company that your address is covered before you spend time on a quote.
Filing a Complaint in Ohio
If a company denies a claim you think is valid or stops responding, put your complaint to the company in writing first. Ohio's state office below takes consumer complaints about businesses in general, so it is a place to file a home warranty dispute, but it is not a home warranty regulator by that fact alone. Who regulates the contract is covered in the regulation section above.
Ohio Attorney General: file a consumer complaint
The Attorney General's guidance says insurance complaints generally go to the Ohio Department of Insurance. Complaints are public records and the office mediates, but it cannot be your private attorney.
This paraphrases the office's own page as found in October 2026. Offices change their forms and procedures, so confirm on the page before you file.
