Most home warranty contracts use language like "one built-in refrigerator" or "primary refrigerator." That definition excludes your garage beer fridge, the secondary unit in a finished basement, or a standalone bar refrigerator — regardless of how long you've had it.
What Qualifies as a "Second Refrigerator"
Garage refrigerator
Freestanding unit in an attached or detached garage — the most common secondary unit.
Bar refrigerator / beverage center
Undercounter or freestanding units in a home bar, basement, or entertainment room.
Second kitchen unit
In-law suites, accessory dwelling units, or homes with two full kitchens.
Chest freezer / upright freezer
Technically separate — some plans offer freezer add-ons, others bundle with fridge add-on. Verify.
What the Add-On Covers
The add-on typically covers the same mechanical components as your primary refrigerator:

- Compressor (the most expensive component)
- Evaporator coils and condenser coils
- Thermostat and temperature controls
- Interior fan motors
- Electrical components (relays, capacitors)
Not Covered
- Ice maker and water dispenser (varies — verify per plan)
- Cosmetic damage (dents, scratches, interior lining)
- Food spoilage from a covered breakdown
- Damage from power surges
- Filters (water filters, air filters)
Ice maker note: Coverage for ice makers and water dispensers varies by plan and company. Some include it, others treat it as a separate add-on. Always verify in the sample contract before purchasing.

The Garage Refrigerator Problem
Garage refrigerators run in more extreme temperature swings than kitchen units — hot summers and cold winters stress the compressor. They tend to fail earlier. Some companies require the unit to be in a conditioned space for coverage to apply.
Before adding the coverage: Check your sample contract for any language about the unit's location. If the contract requires "conditioned living space," a garage fridge in an unconditioned garage may not qualify for coverage even with the add-on.
