Home Warranty Sump Pump Coverage (2026)

Sump pumps are included in many standard plans and are underappreciated coverage. A failed sump pump during heavy rain can cause thousands in water damage.

What’s Covered

What’s Excluded

Battery backup systems. Many plans cover the primary sump pump but not the battery backup. These are separate units and may require an add-on.

Water damage from pump failure. If the pump fails and water enters the basement — that resulting water damage is NOT covered by the home warranty. This is homeowners insurance territory (specifically flood/water damage coverage, which many standard policies exclude).

Ejector pumps. Sewage ejector pumps are sometimes covered under plumbing, sometimes separately — verify with your company.

Battery replacement. For battery backup systems, the battery itself is a consumable, not covered.

Float switches. These are wear items that some companies cover, others don’t.

Battery Backup Coverage

If you’re in a flood-prone area, verify whether your plan covers the backup system. Losing both primary and backup during a storm is exactly the scenario where coverage matters most.

Geographic Relevance

Sump pump coverage matters most in: the Midwest (Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati), Northeast basement-heavy markets, and anywhere with high water tables. In dry Western states (Arizona, Nevada, California), sump pumps are rare and this coverage is irrelevant.

Maintenance Tip

Test your sump pump annually by pouring water into the pit. This is maintenance — not a warranty claim. If it doesn’t activate, that’s when you file a claim.
