Climate and Coverage Context
South Carolina's climate puts cooling under strain, in our reading
South Carolina has a humid climate with hot summers and mild winters; July averages run from 76 F in the northwest to 82 F in the Midlands and coastal Lowcountry. Very warm nights, with minimums at or above 75 F, have been mostly above average since 1980. Annual precipitation averages about 47.8 inches, and extreme precipitation is projected to increase.
Air conditioning does most of the work here, so the cooling side of the HVAC cap is the number to check.

Legal framework
Service contracts (S.C. Code Title 38, Chapter 78)
South Carolina's Title 38, Chapter 78 creates a legal framework for selling service contracts. Each provider of service contracts sold in the state files a registration with the Director of the Department of Insurance, must insure its contracts under a reimbursement policy or keep a funded reserve or financial security deposit, and apart from registration is exempt from state licensing requirements. Section 38-78-10 excludes warranties and maintenance agreements as the chapter defines them, and the Department's FAQ says a warranty is made solely by the manufacturer, importer or seller without a separate charge. We could not confirm whether a particular home warranty plan falls inside or outside the chapter, so check the contract and ask the Department whether the company is registered.
Type of rules: General service contract law. A service contract law with registration, bonding or disclosure rules. Whether it reaches a particular home warranty plan was not confirmed.
Partly confirmed. The summary says which points we could not confirm. Researched October 2026; laws and agency pages change, so confirm with the regulator before you rely on a detail.

Consumer Tips for South Carolina Homeowners
Check the company's registration
South Carolina regulates service contracts under a general law with registration, bonding or disclosure rules, and we could not confirm how it applies to every home warranty plan. Ask the South Carolina Department of Insurance whether the company is registered.
Do the cap math for your own system
Get a replacement quote from a local HVAC contractor, then enter it in the calculator above. Our top-ranked option here, AFC Home Club, has an HVAC cap of No cap; the difference between your quote and each company's cap is your out-of-pocket cost if the system fails completely. Details
Confirm coverage for your address
4 companies in our data serve only some states and are marked "check availability" for South Carolina. Confirm with the company that your address is covered before you spend time on a quote.
Filing a Complaint in South Carolina
If a company denies a claim you think is valid or stops responding, put your complaint to the company in writing first. South Carolina's state office below takes consumer complaints about businesses in general, so it is a place to file a home warranty dispute, but it is not a home warranty regulator by that fact alone. Who regulates the contract is covered in the regulation section above.
South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs: file a complaint
The Department of Consumer Affairs says online filing is faster than paper. It mediates for businesses it does not regulate and tries to resolve complaints against businesses it licenses, and its site lets you check whether a business has complaints on file.
This paraphrases the office's own page as found in October 2026. Offices change their forms and procedures, so confirm on the page before you file.
