Climate and Coverage Context
Missouri's climate puts both heating and cooling under strain, in our reading
Missouri's interior location, with no mountain barriers to the north or south, exposes it to cold Arctic air in winter and warm, moist Gulf air in summer. Summers are hot and humid, and since 2010 nighttime lows have been the highest on record. Annual precipitation ranges from about 35 inches in the northwest to about 55 inches in the southeast, and extreme precipitation events have become more frequent. Average annual temperatures differ by about 10 degrees F from north to south.
Both systems get real use here, so look for a plan that covers heating and cooling and compare its cap with your own replacement quote.

How Missouri Regulates Home Warranties

Legal framework
Service contract provider registration (RSMo 385.300 to 385.320)
Missouri makes it unlawful to issue, sell or offer a service contract unless each provider has registered with the Director of the Department of Commerce and Insurance (RSMo 385.302). Rule 20 CSR 200-18.110 requires registration before issuing any contract and annually between January 1 and February 1, with a $300 fee, and it limits the term provider to the party contractually obligated to perform. Financial security options include an insurance policy, a funded reserve, a surety bond or a minimum net worth. We did not confirm whether residential home warranty companies are classified as service contract providers under the chapter, so ask the Department.
Type of rules: General service contract law. A service contract law with registration, bonding or disclosure rules. Whether it reaches a particular home warranty plan was not confirmed.
Partly confirmed. The summary says which points we could not confirm. Researched October 2026; laws and agency pages change, so confirm with the regulator before you rely on a detail.

Consumer Tips for Missouri Homeowners
Check the company's registration
Missouri regulates service contracts under a general law with registration, bonding or disclosure rules, and we could not confirm how it applies to every home warranty plan. Ask the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance whether the company is registered.
Do the cap math for your own system
Get a replacement quote from a local HVAC contractor, then enter it in the calculator above. Our top-ranked option here, AFC Home Club, has an HVAC cap of No cap; the difference between your quote and each company's cap is your out-of-pocket cost if the system fails completely. Details
Check registration
Missouri requires service contract providers to register with the Department of Commerce and Insurance before issuing contracts, but we did not confirm that residential home warranty companies fall under that requirement. Ask the Department. Details
Confirm coverage for your address
4 companies in our data serve only some states and are marked "check availability" for Missouri. Confirm with the company that your address is covered before you spend time on a quote.
Filing a Complaint in Missouri
If a company denies a claim you think is valid or stops responding, put your complaint to the company in writing first. Missouri's state office below takes consumer complaints about businesses in general, so it is a place to file a home warranty dispute, but it is not a home warranty regulator by that fact alone. Who regulates the contract is covered in the regulation section above.
Missouri Attorney General: consumer complaints
The Consumer Protection Section mediates complaints between businesses and consumers. It does not represent individuals and is prohibited by law from giving you legal advice.
This paraphrases the office's own page as found in October 2026. Offices change their forms and procedures, so confirm on the page before you file.
